Pimps Up, Ho's Down

Mere Existence sent this beauty in from a Chinese restaurant in Brooklyn.

"I couldn't make any sense of the meaning of this one," he writes.

Perhaps it's social commentary that challenges our notions about the results of the women's lib movement. Perhaps this bard wants us to reconsider man's place in society.

Then again, it might just be a guerrilla advertisement for Brent Owen's "pimpumentary" Pimps Up, Ho's Down (The Director's Cut). Owens enters the secret society of pimps and players to experience the ultimate exploration of the pimp game. The film is the culmination of over a decade of research and production. With over 30 minutes of never before seen footage, the director's cut was deemed too hot for cable T.V.

That solved the mystery for me. I think that both of your conclusions are probably right... I'm guessing that somebody saw the film, thought it 'meant something or other', and decided to declare that 'something or other' publicly. I should leave a note for them, so that they know what they were trying to say... it's like your mouth speaks on behalf of their hearts. On that very same day that I took the picture, a man was in there ordering soup, and complained about the Chinese server's accent, by saying, "You don' even know how ta talk."

"Pimps up hoes down" and variants are pretty common in rap lyrics, so it doesn't have to be related to the film at all: E-40 "Pimps, Hustlas" and Too $hort's "Analyze the Game" both use the phrase, while Snoop's "Gin and Juice" goes "Gs up hos down while ya motherfuckas bounce to this" just before the first chorus...

Daryl is right. Sometimes my sarcasm just doesn't translate on a blog.
